The Gamewell Volunteer Fire Department
The GVFD is your first line of protection during times of emergency crisis in the Gamewell Community. We protect over 9,000 citizens in our 37 square mile district. We have over 50 members to assist in times of need and ready to respond when called up on. Our calls have skyrocketed in the last few years to over 1084 calls in 2015.
Our NC Protection Rating is a Class 5
The GVFD was formed in 1957 and charter with the state in 1958 at which time the city fire department stopped answering calls outside the city. The GVFD was organized with the help and leadership of the Gamewell Ruritan Club and with the support of the communities in and surrounding Gamewell. The first meeting was held at the Gamewell School and Mrs. Clyde (Ruby) Watson gave the first dollar for the new fire department. It was a silver dollar that her father had in his pocket when he and his wife died in a house fire. The fire department's original misson was to protect homs and business from fire. Just as times have changed, so has our mission. Today we provide the community with a full range of emergency services.
PLEASE OBTAIN A BURNING PERMIT BEFORE BURNING.
